This one's a bit of a rough ride. The band steadily gains momentum in the first three songs before being held up by the establishment's bartender over volume concerns, during which time he threatens the band with expulsion from the stage (you can hear the exchange under the chattering in track 4 if so desired). The band, audibly shaken, subsequently delivers a series of hit-and-miss performances from then on, their footing unsure. Highlights include the premiere performance of "Gun-in-Mouth Blues" devolving into a 1968-era Beefheart-like jam, a ferocious "Like a Prayer" and a learn-it-as-we-go-along rendition of Roxy Music's "Editions of You." The last two tracks are, sadly, missteps.

As a curious bit of trivia, the bartender at Grant & Green is a condescending asshole who looks not unlike former president Ulysses S. Grant.
